SEYMOUR LIBRARY ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF KIWANIS DESIGN-A-BOOKMARK CONTEST
On Friday, March 14 at 2 pm, the Kiwanis Club of Brockport and the Seymour Library announced the 3 grand prize winners of the "Read Around the World" Design-a-Bookmark Contest.
The Winners
The winner in the Kindergarten & 1st grade category was Bridget Moyer; in the 2nd & 3rd grade category, Samuel Kiriyak; and in the 4th & 5th grade category, Rebecca Graves. Each received a $25 gift certificate to the Lift Bridge Book Shop, courtesy of the Friends of the Seymour Library, and a printed supply of their winning bookmark.
Honorable mentions were made to Brian Griffin (K & 1st grade category), Paige McGrath (2nd & 3rd grade category) and Andrew Bissanti (4th & 5th grade category).
The Judges
Judges for the contest were Brockport Village Trustee Hanny Heyen, Town of Clarkson Supervisor Paul Kimball, Seymour Library Board President Lori Lessord, Hill School Librarian Cathy Mangan, Seymour Children's Librarian Kathleen Phillips, Brockport Kiwanis Club President Bob Reusch, Barclay School Librarian Suzanne Shearman, Friends of the Seymour Library President Charlotte Wright, and Ginther School Librarian Ellen Zinni.
Prizes for All!
Each of the 126 children who submitted an eligible bookmark entry received a hardcover book, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Brockport. Children in grades K & 1 received "Little Rat Makes Music" by Monika Bang-Campbell and Molly Bang, children in grades 2 & 3 received "The Curious Adventures of the Abandoned Toys" by Julian Fellowes & S.D. Schindler, and children in grades 4 & 5 received the 2007 Caldecott award-winning "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick.
"One of the most important behavior measures that correlates with reading scores is the number of books in the home. Access to printed materials – and not poverty – has been shown in studies to be the crucial variable affecting reading skills," stated Seymour Library Director Cassie Guthrie. "We're thrilled to partner with Kiwanis to provide children with a copy of their very own book to take home, and to introduce children and their parents to the resources at the library," she continued.
Winning Artwork on Display
Winning bookmark artwork will be on display at the Seymour Library through March 31st and a limited supply of bookmarks will be available at the Seymour Library and in the libraries at the Ginther, Barclay and Hill Schools.
Children who submitted entries but have not yet picked up their books may do so at the Seymour Library's Information Desk.
